This course integrates various academic fields - including anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, economics and public policy – in discussing the positive and negative impacts of tourism; it explores the social significance of cultural tourism and tourism and examines the relationship between public policy and tourism. For example, it surveys how sustainable development policies promoting tourism help to coordinate conflicts between cultural heritage preservation and modern urban planning. Tourism development policies in Asian regions or countries will also be observed.
